ABSTRACT

This work evaluated the stock control practices of hotel establishments in Benin metropolis, Edo State. Stock control as important in hotel industry to monitor the movement and usage of materials. The problems associated with lack of effective control system result to misappropriations, Shortage, wastage, pilferage and degeneration of materials need for production and operational activities. The objective of the study were to verify the stock control methods use in various hotel establishments in Benin metropolis, verify the sustainability procedures use for stock control in hotel industry and to determine the relationship between types of stock control practised and profit margin of hotels. The hypotheses of this study were: there is no significant difference on stock control practices of the hotel establishment and there is no significant difference of stock control practiced and profit margin of the hotels. Data for this research was generated using the questionnaire. Simple frequency percentage mean and Chi-square test of independence were used to analysed the data generated for the study. The findings of the analysis proved that there is a significant difference on stock control practice of the hotel establishment (X cal 71.288 > X tab 2.73) and there is a significant difference of stock control practiced and profit margin of the hotels. (X cal 46.727 > X tab 2.73) at 95% confidence level. The empirical survey revealed that the null hypothesis was not true. This implies that the practice of stock control has significant effect on profit margin of hotel for industrial sustainability. Hotel establishments must control their stocks of items and in such case adopt effective, consistent and reliable measures on doing so.
