ABSTRACT

Functional education lays more emphasis on recipient’s ability to put into practice what is learnt. The functionality of education is dependent on the extent to which the recipients can effectively use their hearts, heads, and hand to contribute to socio-economic, technological, scientific and political development of a nation. This study was on development of an instructional manual for teaching crochet and macrame household crafts in tertiary institutions.m Abia State Nigeria the purpose of the study was to determine the objectives of the instructional manual, lor teaching crochet and macrame household craft, determine the instructional materials required in developing the instructional manual for teaching macrame household crafts, develop a manual lor teaching crochet and macrame household crafts, produce some items using the developed manual, 'among others. The study adopted Research ana development (R and D) design which was modified from ten to four stages. The first stage is Needs Assessment questionnaire structured to make use of flupoint rating scale that has response categories of Strongly Agree (SA.), Agree (A), Disagree (D), and Strongly Disagree (SD). The study area was tertiary institutions in Abia State which.include Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochiikwu (ASCETA), Abia State University, Uluru (AI3SU) and Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture (MOUAU). Eighteen (18) lecturers and forty-one (41) students formed the population for the study making a total of fifty-nine (59) respondents. Data were collected for the study. Data obtained from the study were analyzed statistically using means and standard deviation while The Hypotheses were tested using T-Test. The result revealed seven problems out of eight listed were being encountered in teaching cralts in tertiary institutions in Abia State. The study also revealed that out of the fourteen problems identified, thirteen problems were encountered by students in tertiary institutions in Alia State while learning crafts. Overall, the study shows that no statistical significant difference exists between the problems encountered in teaching and learning ofcrafts in tertiary institutions in Abia State, hence the need for an improvement. The result also indicated that based on lecturers’ opinion, all the contents ofthe instructional manual developed will help in improving the teaching and learning of crochet and macrame crafts. There is no significant difference between the mean responses ofHome Economics lecturers in the universities and those in Colleges of education on the appropriateness ofthe instructional manual forteaching crochet and macrame household crafts. The respondents agreed to the stated procedures for producing items using the developed instructional manual for teaching crochet and macrame household crafts. There was no significant difference between the mean responses ofthe lecturers in the universities and those in Colleges of education on how to produce items using the developed instructional manual for teaching crochet and macrame household crafts. All the null hypotheses were accepted, which means that there is no statistical significant difference between the mean responses of Home Economics lecturers in the University and the Home Economics lecturers in the College of Education. The study also developed an instructional manual for teaching crochet and macrame household crafts and samples ol these crafts were produced
