ABSTRACT
The present
study screened and identified bacteria from soil samples having the ability to
produce xylanase. Soil samples were collected from different locations within
umuahia. The 10 soil samples were cultured by spread plate inoculation method
on nutritrient agar, sabourand dextrose agar and Tryptone soya agar media.
Totally 10 bacteria were Isolated and tested for the ability to produce
xylanase. ISolate IS51, IS61 and IS71 showed moderately to highly ability to
produce xylanase as indicated by the yellow zone size. IS71 suspected to be
Bacillus spp produced the highest size of yellow zone of 16mm, followed by IS51
(13mm) suspected to be Pseudomonas spp and IS61 (12mm) suspected to be
Micrococcus spp. These Isolates (IS71, IS51 and IS61) can be used to boost
industrial and agro-industrial processes requiring the enzme xylanase soil
samples could be an interesting source to explore for xylanase producing
actinomycetes and there IS not any scienctific report from the areas ofstudy
