ABSTRACT

The role Agriculture play in the regional and economic growth and poverty reduction of the country has diminished over the years due to the dominant role of the ci tide oil sedm in the economy. The paper examined the role of agriculture on Nigeria s economic growth and poverty reduction in Nigeria by developing a model that is able to investigate how agricultural output, consumer price index and government capital expenditure have affected economic growth through the use ofmulti-variable regression analysis. This research work examined the role oj agriculture on economic growth and poverty reduction in Nigeria using annual time series data from 1981-2017. The results ofregression analyses showed a significant impact ofgovernment spending on agricultural sector on both the agricultural output response, consumer price index and economic growth. This study therefore concluded that agriculture plays a significant role on economic growth and poverty reduction in Nigeria. . For any nation, to grow, especially in Nigeria, the focused ofgovernment on the agricultural sector should not be overlooked, thus, the government should direct its spending efforts in productive means, through increase, improve and encourage the output ofthe agricultural sector as previously shown. This will create better avenuesforjob creation, growth and high productivity
