ABSTRACT
This study investigated the relationship
between administrative performance of principals and teachers' productivity in
Umuahia education zone of Abia State. It was a descriptive design carried out
with an ex-post facto research design. Four research questions were formulated
to guide the study. The objectives were to: find out the leadership behaviour
prevalent among the principals, examine the relationship between the adoption
of autocratic behaviour on staff personnel administration, finance management
and instructional programmes by principals and teachers' productivity in public
secondary schools in Umuahia education of Abia State, investigate the
relationship between the adoption of democratic behaviour on staff personnel
administration, finance management and instructional programmes by principals
and teachers' productivity in public secondary schools in Umuahia education
zone and lastly examine the administrative performance of principals on
teachers' productivity in public secondary schools in Umuahia education. The
population is 1.119 teachers and the sample size is 224 teachers. This study
used quc-uionnaiic tagged Administrative Performance of Principals
and'Teachers' productivity (APPI PQ) to collect data which had a reliability
coefficient of 0.91. Data collected was analyzed using mean and standard
deviation, t-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. 1 he findings were
that democratic behaviour was prevalent among principals, there is high and
negative relationship between the principals' autocratic behaviour and
teachers' productivity, there is high and positive relationship between
principals' democratic behaviour and teachers' productivity and principals'
administrative performance have high and positive relationship with teachers'
productivity. Based on the findings, the researcher made some recommendations
among which was that principals should adopt more of democratic leadership
style in order to achieve quality education.
