Quantification Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) And Some Heavy Metals In Two Leafy Vegetables Sold In Aba Metropolis:- Izunwa, Mary A.
ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the levels
ofPAHs and heavy metals in some vegetables (Tallinium triangulae and Piper
guinesse) that was purchased within the city ofAba. The quantification ofthe
PAHs and heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Al, Co, Cd, V, Mn. Fe. Cu, and Cr) concentration
were done using a Gas Chromatography and an Atomic Absorption Spectrometry
respectively. The vegetables from the highway markets in Aba gave (mg kg'1)
4.57, 1.98, 1.84, 154.57, 2.60 and 4.55 respectively while the control gave
1.84mg/kg and 1.42 mg/kg. The concentration of tire heavy metals in the sample
follows the decreasing order as follows V > Fe > Al > Mn > Co >
Cr > Pb > Cd. The concentration ofVanadium were higher in all the samples
and Cadmium was the least metal found in the samples. All selected samples
collected from the urban markets contained significant increase in PAHs and
heavy metals. However, to prevent any chronic health risk and extent of heavy
metals contamination, steps must be taken to reduce human activities that
increases the levels of heavy metals and PAHs at the urban markets. Regular
monitoring of heavy metals in vegetables grown in waste water irrigated areas
is also ofparamount important.
