ABSTRACT
A prevalence and titer level study of antibodies to febrile
antigens of Salmonella species among students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture
Umudike was carried out from July to September 2006. Among the 70 students that
were diagnosed for typhoid fever using Slide agglutination test, it was
observed that 61.14% of them were infected, thus 61.14% is the prevalence rate.
The prevalence was seen to be more in the females of ages 22years than in males
and females of other ages. Also the students infected with S. typhi were lesser
than those infected with the S paratyphi A, B and C. The level of Agglutinins
of the H antibodies were observed to be more than that of the 0 antibodies.
From the tube agglutination test carried out it shows that 1:80 and above
(1:160) titer level were significant Diagnostic for typhoid as these titer
level (1:80 and above) were predominant among most of the student tested.
