Abstract
The
research is a descriptive survey research design on the preservation and
conservation of library materials in monau library. The major purpose was to
investigate the preservation and conservation of library materials in mouau
library. It was guided byfour objectives andfour research questions. The study
has a population of53 which was totally enumeratedfor the study. A single data
collection instrument was; a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using percentage
and mean scores. Data analysis revealed the preservation and conservation
practices in mouau which includes security of library materials, disaster
recovery procedure, environmental control, handling of library materials.
Furthermore, findings revealed that Security of library materials.
Environmental control, Handling of library materials, and Training ofstaffon
preservation and conservation of library materials are carried out efficiently
and effectively. High acidity levels of book materials, excessive light, air
pollution, relative humidity, biological agents (e.g. termite, cockroaches,
spider, rodents etc), power supply, technical know-how, and funding are some of
the major problems militating against preservation and conservation of library
material in mouau library. The study proffered solutions to the challenges of
preservation and conservation of library materials which includes: Binding,
Photocopying. Digitization, De-acidification, Cleaning and dusting, Provision
ofAdequate fund, Training and re-training ofstaff and Provision ofAdequate
power supply etc.
