ABSTRACT
Investigation was carried out to test the potericyQfome plant extracts for the control of yam tuber rot caused by Fusarium oxysporum, Asperigil/us niger and Asperigillus f/a vus which were isolated from rotted tissues of yam tubers obtained from National Root Crops Research lnsttute (N.R.C.R.I) Umudike. These organisms were isolated from stored yam tubers. They caused soft rot leading to tissue discolouration and production of foul smell from the rotted portion of the tubers. Extract used were obtained from two-plant materials — seed of Xylopia aethiopica and Zingiber officinale and the extracting solvent was (Hot) Water. The extracts of the plant materials were found to be fungitoxic against the path ogens tested Xylopia aethiopica was found to inhibit Fusarium orysporum than others, while Zinigiber officinale was found to inhibit A. niger than others which means the hot water extract of uda (Xy/opia aethiopica) and Ginger (Zinigiber officinale) suppressed the growth of the pathogenic fungi. F. oxysporum., A. niger and A. flavus in culture and reduced rot development in yam tubers.
