ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the phytochemical composition of Vernonia amygdalina incorporated high-fat diet in Monosodium Glutamate treated animals and its effect on serum creatinine and urea in albino rats. Forty male albino rats were used in this study. Group A animals ( positive control), group B were fed with high-fat diet + Monosodium Glutamate, group C fed with high-fat diet + Monosodium Glutamate + 5% Vernoniaamygdalina, and group D fed with high-fat diet + Monosodium Glutamate + 10% Vernoniaamygdalina. Test diet and treatment was administered from the 6th to the 12th week. Phytochemical analysis showed that VA incorporated diets had significantly (p

<0.05) lower Tannins and alkaloids but significantly higher total phenols and cyanide content than the High fat diet only. Feeding of the diets to test animals resulted significantly (p><0.05) lower Urea and Creatinine. These findings suggest that the incorporation of VA in diets not confer a protection against MSG and high fat induced changes in kidney function.>
