ABSTRACT

The phytochemical contents of aqueous extract from the seed of Margaritaria disco idea and their effect on Na,KATpase activity, membrane stability and some other biochemical parameters wcrc investigated in rats. Analysis for the phytochemical contents of the seed indicated the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Phenols, Tannins. Reducing sugar, Soluble Carbohydrates, Steroids, Cyanogenic Glycosides, Saponins, B- Carotene at mean concentrations of 1194±0.03mg/mi, 316±0.01mg/mi.1153±0.03mg/100m1, 43.6±0.03mg/i 00m1, 1062±0.03mg/ lOOm!, 378±0.01 mg/lOOm!, 3.49±0.02mg/mi, 1.2 1±0.04mg/mI, 0.1 83±0 .05mg/mi and 0.66±0.1 9mg/mi respectively. Oral administration of the aqueous sccd extract to rats at 25, 50,100, and 200mg/kg body weight resulted in significant (P<0.05) decrease in serum electrolytes (Na. K, Ca, Cl. HCO3 ) and Na,KATPase activity. A significant (P<0.05) dose dependent increase in membrane stabilizing effect on red blood cell membrane when compared with Indomethacin, (an anti-inflammatory drug) was also observed. The LD 0of this extract in Mice was found to be 316.2mg/kg body weight using analysis of measure of mortality. The result showed that the seed extract contain bioactive components that exerts physiological effects but could be toxic if not consumed in a controlled manner.
