ABSTRACT
The field experiment was located at the Eastern wing of the Michael
Okpara University of Agriculture Research farm, Umudike during the 2007
cropping season. Six varieties of Sweet Potato were evaluated to determine
their agronomic yield. There included, TIS 87/0087, EX-Igbariam, TIS 2552.
OP .1.1.3, TIS 86/0256, TIS 8164 and TIS 8441. The varieties were planted at
a spacing of 100 x 30cm. The experimental layout was Randomized Compete
Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. At harvest, data were collected on
weight of fresh biomass, number of saleable roots, number of unsaleable roots,
total number of roots, weight of saleable roots, weight of unsaleable roots and
total weight of roots. The result of the experiment showed that TIS 87/0087
recorded the highest yield more than other varieties under the acidic soil
condition. Therefore, TIS 87/0087 may be recommended for further
improvement for farmers who are working under acidic soil conditions on the
basis of its high yield.
