ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to
examine the perceived instructional
competencies of teachers for the implementation of senior secondary school chemistry curriculum in Ikot Ekpene Education Zone of Akwa Ibom State. The
study was guided by five specific objectives, five research questions were posed
for the study and five null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level
of significance. The study adopted descriptive survey research design, the
population of the study was 1056 comprising 126 chemistry teachers and 930
senior secondary II Chemistry students.
The sample of this study was 211 comprising of 25 chemistry teachers and
186 senior secondary II Chemistry students using simple random sampling
technique. The instrument for data collection was the researcher designed
questionnaire titled “Instructional
Competencies of Teachers for the Implementation of Chemistry Curriculum Questionnaire (ICTICCQ)”.
The instrument was validated by three experts. The reliability of the
instrument was 0.74 derived using
Cronbach Alpha statistic. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard
deviation for research questions while the hypotheses were analysed using
t-test at 005 level of significance. The result of the findings revealed that
teachers’ possessed competencies in content/subject matter, used of
instructional methodologies among others. Based on the findings it was
recommended that Government of Akwa Ibom State should ensure recruitment of
qualified chemistry teachers so as to maintain teacher/students ratio of
1:40 recommended for secondary schools
by the National Policy on Education of Nigeria for effective classroom
management and implementation of chemistry curriculum and also improve on the
conditions of service for teachers especially chemistry teachers at the
secondary school level, the teachers should be paid regularly as at when due
including all other allowances to ensure effective implementation of chemistry
curriculum.
