ABSTRACT
The study
examined the perceived influence of mobile phone on the academic performance of
secondary school students in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia
State. A descriptive survey design was used. 240 students made up of forty (40)
male and female students were selected from each of 3 public and 3 private
secondary schools selected across the study areas using multi-stage random
sampling technique made up the sample. I he instrument used to collect data was
a questionnaire. Four research questions and two hypotheses guided the study.
The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation and the
hypothesis tested using t-test statistics. The result of the study snowed that
mobile phone has negative influence on the academic performance ofstudents.
Llris is because students’ attention is focused on non-academic uses like
chatting, music, text messages, watching films and playing games while their
academic work suffers. The result oi the hypothesis showed that there was no
significant influence of the use of mobile phone on the academic performance
ofjunior and senior students. Male students use mobile phone more than the
female ones. The study therefore recommends that teachers, parents, school
administrators should strictly monitor the activities of students and
discourage the use of this device to avoid the negative effect on students’
academic performance due to the inherent distractions from the use of mobile
phones.
