ABSTRACT
This study investigated Perceived Influence of Nigerian Pidgin Language on Academic Performance of Students of Government owned universities in Abia State, Nigeria. The design used for this study was descriptive survey. Four research questions guided the study while four hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The population of this study comprised 38,940 students made up of all the students in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) and Abia State University (ABSU). The sample size for this study was 396 made up of 206 students from MOUAU. 90 males and 116 females and 190 students from ABSU, 80 males and 110 females v hich was determined using Taro Yamane’s formula. The instrument for data was the researcher's constructed titled Nigerian Pidgin Language on Academic Performance (NPLAP) which was structured along four points modified Likert type scale. The instrument was validated and the reliability index was 0.75. The data collected was analyzed using frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while the t-test statistic was used to test the null hypotheses. The findings of the study showed that students of government owned universities in Abia State used pidgin language to high extent which influences the academic performance of students of both MOUAU and ABSU. Students of universities in Abia State also used pidgin language based on gender to high extent. Finally, the use of Nigeria pidgin language influences the academic performance of students of government owned universities.
