ABSTRACT
This study investigated the Perceived Influence of Child Labour on the Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Awka-North L.G.A of Anarnbra state, using descriptive Survey design. Five research questions were posed and five hypotheses formulated to guide the study. A twenty five item questionnaire was used to elicit response from respondents. The study involved sample of 292 respondents (9 teachers and 283 Junior secondary School 11 students) selected randomly from the population of 2922; 96 teachers and 2826 Junior secondary school students respectively in the 8 secondary schools in Awka —North L.G.A of Anambra state. A four point scale questionnaire validated by experts in measurement and evaluation and guidance and counselling were used for data collection. Data analysis were done using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions while the hypotheses were tested using t-test statistics and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Results indicated that child labour influences students' academic performance to a high extent. Hypotheses tested shows that there is no significant difference between the mean responses of teachers and students on the influence of child labour on the academic performance of students. Recommendations included that child labour legislation and laws should be improved, already existing child labour laws and legislation should be enforced, government should increase access of quality education to all students irrespective of socio- economic background and vocational education and training should be provided for older child labourers.
