ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to identify why teachers and students see chemistry as a very difficult subject in secondary schools in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State. Four research questions were formulated to guide study. As a source of data, 440 ss2 chemistry students and 46 chemistry teachers were randomly sampled, from which 132 students and 14 chemistry teachers were selected for the study. Two hypotheses were formulated, carefully structured questionnaire with four points rating scale were administrated to the respondents. The questionnaire was filled, the data were presented in frequency table and analyzed with mean and standard deviation. In the research work, use of unsuitable teaching method is considered as one of the factors making the teaching of chemistry difficult for the teacher, teachers qualification, students interest and students background knowledge were also found to be contributing to these difficulties. The two hypotheses were tested using correlation at p<O.05 level of significant and were accepted. These were the major findings in the research. Some recommendations were made, that school administrators should be very careful when recruiting teachers to avoid employment of non —qualified chemistry teachers, which will enhance the teaching of chemistry in Nigeria, parents are also advised not to force their children to do courses they did not want to do because they will find it difficult to cope. And also, government are advised to provide adequate facilities to secondary schools to enable the teacher use the best method suitable for the particular subject he or she is teaching.
