ABSTRACT
The quest to improve the teaching and
learning of mathematics in our secondary school prompted this study titled,
pedagogies for reduction of mathemaphobia among senior secondary school
students in Umuahia education zone of Abia state. One hundred and twenty
respondents consisting of 20 mathematics teachers and one hundred students were
used for the study. Four research questions and two hypotheses guided the
conduct of the study. The instrument for data collection was a researcher
developed questionnaire validated by three experts and found to have
reliability index of 0.77 using Cronbach alpha. The copies of questionnaire
were administered to the sampled students and their responses were analyzed to
answer the research questions using mean and standard deviation. The results of
the analyses showed that the incorporation of other methods of teaching
mathematics like discovery method, laboratory method, cooperative learning and
discussion method reduced mathemaphobia among senior secondary students in
Umuahia education zone. Based on the research questions as perceived by
teachers and students at the end of each research question, recommendations
were made that those variables discovered to have hand in student’s
mathemaphobia should be addressed adequately by the relevant authorities
concerned.
