Abstract
The study investigated the influence of Parental
Power, Reward and Coercion as determinants of adolescents’ behaviour in
secondary school. The population of the study consisted of all SS 11 and SS 111
Students in Aba Education Zone of Abia State. The subjects for the study
comprised of 250 students from the study area. The number was selected through,
simple random sampling technique! Three research questions were raised. A
Parental Power, Reward and Coercion Questionnaire (PPRCQ) constructed by the
researcher was the instrument for collecting data. Mean was used to analyze the
data. The study found that the total level of educational guidance, tangible
and intangible reward offered by parents to their adolescents go along way to
determine their behaviour in school. The study further revealed that parents
who force their adolescents to do things are not helping them to behave well in
school. The study concluded that parental education, and adequate parenting
skills to a greater extent detemine how the adolescent child behaves in school.
