Abstract
The paper entitledparadigm shift in the
curriculum oflibrary and information science in Nigeria in the 21s century
takes cognizance that librarianship changes as new knowledge evolves in the
society. The society is dynamic not static, so is information constantly
evolving. The thrust of librarianship is training of pi ofessionalsfor handling
information gathering, processing and dissemination this is achievable through
the library and information science curriculum. The profession and the
professionals are in constant change in cuiriculum content and delivery as to
be relevant and current in satisfying the information need ofthe society.
Knowledge is power when the expected knowledge is received on time andput to
use. The student of Library and information science through curriculum update
and self development should embrace the challenge and prove their worth in
current information provision and delivery. The paper presents the insights in
knowledge evolutions and the impact on library and information science
profession. The implication to training, curriculum and service delivery is
that ‘libraries will be lookingfor new librarians who understand the modalities
ofworking with different kinds ofpatrons in a distance relationship, and
thriving in an environment ofchange. The student ofthe 21st century is
differentfrom the student ofthepast, and these differences will undoubtedly become
even more prevalent. Technology will change, university library users will
change, library mission will change, everything will change - and librarians
must adapt, or wither away, defeated on thefield, leaving library users to the
alternative ofsearch engines andJeeves. It concludes stressing that the obvious
changes in the profession which come as a result ofinevitable changes in the
society require that much should be done especially in the curriculum of
library and information science.
