ABSTRACT
In this study, twelve normoglycernic albino rats were randomly assigned into three groups of four animals each. The control, aqueous and methanolic groups. The control groups were orally administered physiological saline. While the aqueous and methanolic groups were administered aqueous and methanolic extracts of Pleurotus tuber-regium respectively at 100mg/kg body weight for four weeks to examine the antihyperglycemic and antilipidemic effects. It showed a no significant (p<0.05) change in the blood glucose levels of the groups. Triacylglycerol levels (mg/dl) was found to be 126.50 ± 4.03, 102.69 + 4.93, 113.85 ± 8.11 in the control, aqueous and methaolic groups respectively. Total cholesterol decreased in the aqueous and methanolic groups (98.56 ± 2.59, 103.11 ± 2.89) relative to control (130.83 ± 4.99). Serum LDL-cholesterol concentration (mg/dl) decreases at the aqueous and methanolic groups. There was no significant change in relative weight of vital organs. The results indicate that oral administration of Pleurotus tuber-regium could lower the levels of triacylglycerol, total cholesterol and HDL and may be used in management of cardiovascular diseases.
