ABSTRACT
A total of twenty five (25) soil samples were
collected from five different sample sites in Aba. The media used were potato
dextrose agar for fungi isolation, nutrient agar, amylolytic, cellulolytic and
lipolytic media for isolation of total heterotrophic bacteria and bacteria
capable of degrading cellulose, carbohydrate and lipids. The fungal count
ranged from 4.2 x 10° to 6.8 x 10° cfu/g while the bacterial count ranged from
5.0 x 10° to 8.0 x 10° cfu/g. Amylolytic bacterial count ranged from 4.0 x 10°
to 4.8 x 10° cfu/g, for cellulolytic bacterial count ranged from 4.6 x 10° to
5.2 x 10° cfu/g while lipolytic bacterial count ranged from 1.0 x 10° to 1.6 x
10° cfu/g. The microorganisms isolated were Geotrichum spp, Aspergillus spp,
Fusarium spp, Penicillium spp, Trichoderma spp, Clostridium acetobutylicum,
Streptomyces cellulolytics, Xanthomonas, Pseudomonas mendocina, Bacillus spp,
Klebsiella spp, Lactobaci/lus spp and Micrococcus spp. The result of this study
showed that microorganism has the ability to degrade house or domestic waste
which comprises organic components such as cellulose, lipids, carbohydrate etc.
