ABSTRACT
Fifteen dried crude herbal drug samples (leavesstenibak
and roots) collected from the local market in Umuahia and Owerri were analyzed
for microbiological quality. Effects of packaging and storage conditions were
determined on leaves, stem bark and root samples. Total mould counts ranged
from 4.0 x iO3cfu/g to 2.6 x iO4cfu/g. Aspergillus and PenicilliLlm species
were the predominant moulds foliwed by Rhizopris species. However, Neurospora,
Botrytis and Geotrichum species were found in lower frequency. The effects of
packaging and storage showed that leaf samples packaged in polyethylene pouches
showed lower fungal counts than samples left on shelves. Aspergil/us had the
highest isolation frequency in root samples . Control measures include rapid
drying and refrigeration , packaging in an air-tight containers such as glass
jars.
