ABSTRACT

A total number of five (5) bacterial genera and one (1) fungus were isolated from swimming pool water of different hotels in Urnuahja, Abia State. The isciated bacteria are Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coil, Salmonella spp and Shigelia spp while the only fungus isolated was Aspergillus spp. The highest percentage occurrence of 30.7% was observed for Staphylococcus aureus while the least percentage occutrence of 7.7% was observed for Shigella spp Salmonella spp and Escherichia coil, have the same percentage occurrence of 23.1% while Proteus mirabilis, had the percentage occurrence of 15.4%. The total bacterial count shows that isolate 10 (Escherichia coli) had the highest count 1 .86 > 10 cfu/ml while the least bacterial count of 1.38 x iO cfu/ml was observed for isolate 1KV (Shig/ia spp). The total coliform count shows that isolale RD (Escherichia co/i) had the highest count of 1 .43 x I 0 cfu/ml while the least coliform count of 1 .24 x 102 cfulml was observed for isolate IG (Shi ge/ia spp). The total Fungal count shows that isolate 10 (Escherichia coil) had the highest count of 1 .33 x 102 cfu/ml while the least fungal count of 1 .11 x 102 cfu/ml was observed for isolate VR (Shi gel/a spp). The results of the study have shown that the disinfection of swimming pool water around the vicinity varies. In order to ensure the safety of the health of swimning pool users and also to prevent the spread of pathogenic microorganisms, it is therefore appropriae that high-level of treatment through disinfection be carried out in hotel swimming poo]s before usage or during swimming period in other to maintain a clean swimming environment and also eliminate both natural swimming pool water organisms and those introduced unknowingly by swimming pool users.
