ABSTRACT

 Microbiological and physicochemical analyses were carried out for five boreholes in World Bank Housing Estate, Umuahia. The Microbiological analysis was carried out for the detection of feacal coliform and subsequently organisms present in the analyzed water samples were identified following the standard methods. The identified organisms include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus species, Streptococcus faeca/is, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus species, Bacillus species, Pseudomonas aerogenosa. Two fungi and one yeast genera were isolated and identified. The total aerobic plate count (TAPC) gave a range of 3.4x10°- 6.35x10'Cfu ml, Escherichia coli count range from 2.0x10° 2.9x10° while the fungal count from 2.9x10°-3.5X10Cfu ml. The coliform count ranged between 3-180MPN/1OOml. The microorganisms isolated and their percentage occurrence are Escherichia coli (17.4%), Enterobacter aerogenes (17.4%), Proteus specie (13.0%), Pseudomonas aerugenosa (17.4%}, Staphylococcus aureus (4.3%), Klebseilla peumoniae (13.0%), Bacillus species (8.7%), Steptococcus faecalis (8. 7%), Penicillium species (30%), Aspergillus species (30%), Sacchromyces species (40%). These results underscore the need for treatment of these boreholes by borehole proprietors and also by simple treatment methods such as boiling and agitation by the users before drinking.
