ABSTRACT
A total of four (4) soil samples were
collected in the month of September from four different stations of a waste
dumpsite. The samples were examined for temperature, pH and for the isolation
of viable aerobic heterotrophic bacteria and fungi. The temperature values of
the soil ranged from 27°C to 32°C while the pH values ranged from 5.04 to 7.35.
The total viable aeiobic heterotrophic bacteria population ranged from 3.6 x
106 cfu/g soil to 9.2 x 106 cfu/g soil while the total viable fungal population
ranged from 4.0 x I 0 cfu/g soil to 7.0 x I 0 cfu/g soil. The result of this
study showed the effect of waste disposal from poorly operated sanitary
landfill to mere open dumps. The result showed that the dumping sites are
contaminated heavily with Escherichia coil, Staphylococcus spp, Serratia spp,
Klebsieliaspp, Bacillus spp, Enterobacter spp, Pseudornonas spp and some fungi
which include A spergilius spp, Trichoderm a, Penc ilium and Saccharonyces spp.
