Liming And Fertilizer Effect Of Different Ash Types On Soil, Growth And Yield Of Cowpea.
ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to evaluate
the liming and fertilizer effect of Wood ash, Rice mill waste ash, Cocoa pod
ash, and Palm bunch ash on soil and to assess the growth and yield of Cowpea in
the Eastern farm of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
Treatment application was 5tons/ha 'each in a Randomized Complete Block Design
with five application. Plot size was 3m. x 3m giving a total area of 357m2.
Properties of the soil were taken before ash application. Soil and plant data
were taken at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after planting. Data obtained were analyzed
using Analysis of Variance and mean separation using Least significant
difference at 5% probability level. Result obtained showed that Wood ash
increased soil pH, plant height and dry matter yield. Rice mill waste ash
increased exchangeable acidity, organic matter and plant girth but slightly
decreased exchangeable aluminum. Cocoa pod and Palm bunch ash increased
nutrient uptake by plant as compared to the other ash types. With the
application of ash, wood ash is ideal for ameliorating soil acidity and Cocoa pod
and Palm bunch ash increased Cowpea growth and yield.
