Leucocyte Migration And Membrane Stability Activities Of Justiciacarnea On Thioacetamide- Induced Stress:- Ugweje, Peculiar.
Abstract
In this study, the effects of Justicia carnea
leaf extract on membrane stability and leucocyte migration activities of
thioacetamide induced liver damage of albino rats. Thirty adult rats of both
sexes were divided into six groups of five rats each. Group I animals were
given feed and water and served as the control group. Groups 2 received
thioacetamide only 300mg/kg body weight, group 3 received daily oral dose of
50mg/kg silymarin while group 4, 5 and 6 received 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg and
600mg/kg respectively. Treatments were via the oral route and lasted for 14
days after which the animals were sacrificed and blood was collected from each
animal for the study. In the membrane stability study, aqueous/ethanol leaf
fraction of Justicia carnea significantly (p< 0.05) lowered percentage
haemolysis in all treatment groups when compared with the thioacetamide group
with 600mg/kg achieving greater RBC membrane stability effects in the various
concentrations of Sodium Chloride solutions used. We therefore concluded that
Justicia carnea leaf extracts can improve erythrocyte membrane stability and
therefore could be used for such purposes.
