ABSTRACT
This
study evaluated the LD50 and the effects of aqueous extract of
Pleurotous.ostriatus grown on HCI - soaked palm oil bunch on serum albumin and
total protein on wistar albino rats. The mushroom was grown on different
concentration of HCI (0.1m to 0.5m). After fruiting, they were harvested,
dried, milled and persevered for further experiment with respect to the rats,
group 1. severed as normal control and was administered only drugs and water ad
hibitum while groups two “2” through six “6” received aqueous extract of the
mushroom grown on different concentration (group 2 = 0.1m HCI grown mushroom,
group 3= 0.2m. group 4= 0.3m. group 5= 0.4m, group 6= 0.5m). Twenty four (24)
male wistar albino rats and eighteen (18) mice where used for the study and fed
vital growers mesh and water ad hibitum. The rats were further grouped into six
(6) groups (n=4) while the mice used for the LDso experiment using standard
method were grouped into two major phases. The experiment lasted for a period
of 21 days after which they were sacrificiaed using standard protocul and blood
collected for biochemical assary. The results ofthe LD50 experiment show that
the first and second phases of the LD50 experiment had no toxicity as no
mortality was recorded. The result of total protein showed that the 0.2m HCI
and 0.3m HCI groups shows significant (p<0.05) increased when compared to
the control, while the result for serum albumin showed 0.3m HCI to be
significantly (p<0.05) decreased when compared with the control. In
conclusion, it could be seen from this work that mushroom grown on POB soaked
in 0.3m HCI has no biochemical effect on protein synthesis and function.
