ABSTRACT
This
study was to assess the knowledge,
attitude, perception and consumption pattern of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS)
among staff of Abia State Government Ministries in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional
survey design was employed to assess participants' knowledge, attitude and
perception of NNS Consumption pattern related to non-nutritive sweeteners was
assessed using food frequency questionnaire. Using Cochran's sample size
formula, a sample of 422 participants was calculated with a 10% increase to
account for potential attrition. Data were collected through a structured
questionnaire, which was validated by experts from Department of Human Nutrition
and Dietetics. Random sampling was used to ensure the sample was representative
of the larger population of Government Ministry staff. Data analysis was
conducted using IBM SPSS (Version 23), applying descriptive and inferential
statistics, chi-square test was used to explore associations between NNS
knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and demographic characteristics. The findings revealed a low level of knowledge
(83.3%) about NNS. A significant proportion (80.2%) were unaware that
non-nutritive sweeteners contain fewer calories than sugar, and 89.1% had
misconceptions about potential cancer risks associated with NNS. Additionally,
majority of the participants had neutral attitudes (91.1%) toward substituting
sugar with NNS. The food products containing non-nutritive sweeteners which had
the highest daily consumption by the staff were flavored drinks (2.3%),
beverages (1.8%), and biscuits (2.1%). No significant relationships were found
between socio-demographic factors such as (age, gender, marital status, or
disease condition) and participants' knowledge, attitudes, or perceptions of
NNS. These results emphasize the need for targeted public health interventions
to address misconceptions and improve awareness regarding the benefits and
safety of NNS, particularly concerning calorie reduction, dental health, and
sugar intake management. The study suggests that educational campaigns could
play a vital role in enhancing understanding and promoting healthier
consumption patterns in the population.
