Kidney Function Parameters Of Rats Administered Ethanol Extract Of Ficus Exasperata Vahl
ABSTRACT
Administration of the ethanol extract of Ficus exasperala
vahi at doses 50mg/kg, 100mg/kg and 500mg/kg to experimental rats group II, III
and IV for 3 days resulted in a significant (P0.05) increase in body weight in
all the groups. Group I which served as the control gained 2.88± 4.68, while
Group 11, III and IV gained 7.21± 2.18, 10.70±4.77, and 8.61±4.84 respectively.
Relative Kidney weight increased as the concentration increased. Kidney weight
increased from 2.8x10 2±2.8x10 4in Group II receiving 50mg/kg body weight of
extract to 1.2x10 2± 5.3 x i0 in group IV receiving 500mg/kg body weight of
extract. Serum Urea concentration increased significantly (P0.05) in all the
groups receiving ethanol extract of Ficus exasperata vahi ranging from 4.70±
0.0 in group II to 5.50 ± 0.58 in group IV. There was also a significant
increase (P0.05) in sodium concentration in all the extract administered groups
ranging from 98.85 0.0 in group 1110 152.25± 35.70 in group IV. These findings
suggest that the ethanol extracts of Ficus exasperata vahi at doses studied
could have significant effect on kidney function.
