ABSTRACT
This study focused on
the isolation and identification of cellulolytic bacteria involved in biogas
production using cassava peels (CP) and chicken dropping (CD) as substrates in
the ratio of 1: I with the water. Variation of pH and temperature during biogas
production were determined. The digester were stirred twice daily to avoid scum
formation in the digester and to allow for easy escape of the gas produced.
Evaluation of amount of biogas produced by the substrates was studied. The
retention time used for this experiment was 42 days during which the daily
internal temperature reading was taken in order to determine the temperature
variation. Standard microbiological methods were used for the isolation and
wastes substrates for biogas production. Four cellulolytic bacteria were
isolated they are Bacillus, Micrococcus, P,seudonionas and Kiebsiella species.
The total anaerobic plate count ranged from 0.59 X 106 cfu/ml to 1.2 X1O6
cfu/ml. the observed pH range were 5.12- 6.19. In conclusion, the study reveals
that cassava peels and chicken droppings has potential of producing biogas.
