Isolation And Characterization Of Microorganisms From Urine In Females Of Reproductive Age In Umuahia
ABSTRACT
Staphylococcus saprophyticus is
commonly observed as a causative agent of uncomplicated urinary tract
infections, most often encountered in young female patients. Culture of the
clean voided midstream urine revealed that 20 out of 50 patients have
significant bacteriuria. 17 out of the 20 positive samples showed growth while
3 showed no growth. Escheriëhia coli 8 (47.0%) was the predominant followed by
Staphylococcus saprophyticus 6 (35.3%). However, Staphylococcus aureus,
Enterococcus species and Kiebsiella species had same occurrence 5.9%.
Staphylococcus saprophyticus isolate was subjected to antibiotic susceptibility
test. The antibiotic susceptibility test showed that the isolates of
Staphylococcus saprophyticus were sensitive to Erythromycin (100%), followed by
Ofloxacin (100%), Ceftazidine (83.3%) and Cloxacillin (5 0%).However,
Ceftriaxone, Cephalexin, Gentamycin, Augmentin were ineffective in vivo. These
results show that Staphylococcus saprophyticus is an important uropathogen in
female adolescents and young adult females in the area.
