Isolation And Antimicrobial Resistance Of Escherighia Coli From Carcasses Of Slaughtered Cows At Ubakala Slaughterhouse In Umuaha South Abia State
ABSTRACT
A total of 50 carcass swab samples were
collected and screened. But 3 2(64%) isolates of E. coil were identified by
colony identification and confirmed by biochemical tests. The E. coli isolates
were tested for sensitivity against eight (8) antibiotics including
tetracycline, ampicillin kamamycin, gentamicin, streptomycin chioramphenicol,
amoxicillin and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim,. The isolates varied in their
antibiotic susceptibility pattern. Sixty four percent (64%) of the isolates
were resistant to more than one antimicrobial agent. The antibiotic most
sensitive and least , sensitive to the isolates are kanamycin and tetracycline
respectively. Kanamycin was sensitive to 28(87.5%) of the total isolates
whereas 28(81.25%) showed resistance to tetracycline. The study showed that
multidrug resistance E. coil isolates are prevalent In cattle at Ubakala and a
considerable portion of E. coil isolates from fresh cattle carcasses is
resistant to a variety of antimicrobial agents.
