Isolation And Antibiotic Sensitivity Profile Of Salmonella Typhi Isolates From Stool Of Patients In Some Hospitals In Owerri Municipal.
ABSTRACT
Fifty (50) stool samples were collected from the patients
(male and female) of two known hospitals (International Christian Hospital and
St. David Hospital) in Owen municipal, to isolate and evaluate the antibiotic
sensitivity profile of S. typhi in the patients population. The antibiotic
sensitivity pattern was determined using disc diffusion method with Abtek brand
of sensitivity disc. Of the 50 samples only 10(20%) produced significant growth
and the antibiotic sensitivity testing was carried out on the 10 isolates. The
antibiotic sensitivity testing revealed that (8) 0% of the isolates were
sensitivity to nitrofurantoin (80%), gentamycin (50%), nalixidic acid (40%),
streptornycin (40%), colistin (10%) and cotrimoxazole (10%). All the isolates
were completely resistant to ampicillin and tetracycline. This work shows the
importance of antibiotics testing before using any antibiotic for treatment of
S. typhi infection. The antibiotic sensitivity pattern of the isolates revealed
a high sensitivity to antibiotics (chloramphenicol,ampicillin,amocillin)not
frequently used for the treatment of S.typhi infection and a high resistance to
antibiotics commonly used.
