Is There A Trade-Off Between Inflation And Unemployment In Nigeria? :- Ngborogwu Tochukwu E
ABSTRACT
The study empirically examined the
trade-offbetween inflation and unemployments Nigeria between 1981 and 2018.
Secondary method ofdata aollection was used to generate datafor this <•* /
study and the sources ofthe data included annual reports accounts and
CBNstatistical bulletin. Multiple regression ofthe ordinary leastsquare
estimation was the tool used to analyse the data in this study. In the model
real GDP(dependent variable) was regressed on Unemployment rate (UR), consumer
price index(CPI), Growth rate ofmoney supply(GRM2), and interest
rate(INT)representing the economy. The study revealed that there exist no
significant relationship between unemployment rate, growth rate ofmoney supply
and interest rate with the Nigerian economy. The study also revealed that the
consumer price index(CPI)has a positive relationship with Nigerian economy. The
study therefore recommend that: Governmentshould use the CPI to adjust wages,
retirement benefits, tax brackets and other important economic indicators so as
to reduce inflation since high CPI indicates inflation, Government through its
money angencies should make contractionary monetarypolicies to increase
interest rates in
