ABSTRACT
This project was aimed at investigating the
potential of some moisaic disease resistance cassava genotypes for ethanol
production. The two cassava mosaic diseases (CMD) resistance varieties were TME
419 and 8082 which were recently developed by National Root Crops Research
Institute Umudike and the last variety Nwaibibi is a local variety. They were
peeled, washed, grated, sieved, sediment and dried by sun drying to obtain the
starch. The starch samples obtained were analyzed for starch content, moisture,
protein, fat, ash ,crude fiber and carbohydrate. The cassava starch samples
were first hydrolyzed using degrading enzymes which included amylase, amyloglucosidase
and fungamy and fermentation was carried out using a yeast strain,
saccharomyces cerevisae. The cassava variety 8082 had the highest yield of
ethanol( 9.60%) at the 8th day while Nwaibibi gave 8.80% at the 10th day and
TMIE419 gave 8.27% quantity of ethanol at the 12th day.
