Abstract
The research is a descriptive survey research
design on the Information Seeking And Use Of Social Media By Library And
Information Science Undergraduate Students Of Michael Okpara Imivetslty Of Agf
iculture, Umudike. The major purpose was to examine the information seeking and
use of social media by library and informatioin science undergraduate students
of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. It was guided byfont
objectives andfive research questions. The study has a population of680from
which 252 were enumerated for the study, A single data collection instruments.
was: a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical method.
Data analysis revealed that Social media sources were utilized efficiently and
effectively among LIS students Furthermore, findings revealed that the Social
media sources includes Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, My space, and
Whalsapp, The findings also revealed that education and academic information,
job opportunities and business information needs, economic information needs,
social and entertainments (Arts) information needs, religious and cultural
information needs and legal and human right information needs were the
information needs ofundergraduate student's in MOUAU. E-crime e.g identity
theft, theft of valuable data, interruption ofbusinessfinancial loss, internet
addiction, Standard crimes e.g kidnapping, fraud and murder, immoral acts eg.
prostitution and pornography, lack of privacy, child abuse, waste oftime, and
cyber-bullying were some ofthe challenges militating against the availability
and accessibility ofsocial media among LIS students in MOUAU. The study also
proffered ways ofimproving information seeking behavior and use ofsocial media
by Library and Information Science undergraduate students. These strategies
include none sharing information you want to protect on any device that connect
to internet, being careful on the kind of information you share about yourself,
family and friends, changing your passwords periodically and not reuse old
passwords, none posting anything that might embarrass you Inter, or that you
don 7 want a stranger to know, none sharing your username, passwords, social
security numbers, credit cards, bank information, salaries with friends and b)
being thoughtful and limiting personal information you share.
