ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of student study habit on the academic achievement using some selected schools in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State as a case study. This research aimed at determining student's positive attitude towards agricultural science, student's negative attitude to reading and note copying in agricultural science, the effect of good study habit in academic achievement of students in agricultural science, the factors that affect student concentration in agricultural science, the ways study habit influence student's academic achievement in agricultural science. The population of the study was three thousand, four hundred and forty five (3445), 1441 students and 147 teachers were randomly selected from five (5) secondary schools in Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State. The instrument utilized for the study was a well structured questionnaire named "Influence of students study habit on academic achievement in Agricultural science" (ISSHAAAS). Two hypotheses were tested and result showed that there was no significant difference in the mean rating of the responses of the two groups (teachers and students). Data was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Based on the finding, students who possessed poor and average study habits could be encouraged to perform better in their academic endeavors through counseling services. Based on the findings; it was recommended that teachers of agricultural science should not label students in any dimension as poor students but should work towards a balance and wholeness of knowledge acquisition by shaping attitudes and orientation of the students towards all round learning, parents should encourage their children to develop good study habit to improve their academic achievement in different subjects in secondary schools.
