ABSTRACT
The
research study focuses on “Influence of overpopulation of students on effective
teaching of Biology in Secondary School in Umuahia North L.G.A, Abia State. In
carrying out the study, the population of the study comprises of 60 teachers in
the 12 No. Secondary Schools in Umuahia North L.G.A, a sample size of 52 were
selected and sampled using stratified random sampling technique. The research
employed the survey research design, cross-sectional developmental survey. Four
research questions were answered in this study using mean and standard deviation,
while Pearson’s coefficient of contingency and Z-test statistical tools were
used to test the four hypotheses and further strength of correlation among the
variable. The general findings of this study was that biology teachers in an
overpopulated class face instructional, disciplinary, physical and evaluation
problems. The study recommends that the educational planners, policy makers and
school administrators should ensure that the recommend teacher students ratio
of 1:40 is maintained. Also that more physical facilities be provided and
workshops, seminars & training be organized for already employed Biology
teachers for effective teaching ofBiology
