ABSTRACT
A total 180 ear
and nasal swabs were collected from clinically healthy goats, sheep, cattle,
pigs and rabbits at the university farm arid were examined for Staph aureus
using mannitol salt agar. Of these cultures, 135 (7 5%) yielded Staph aureus
after a series of biochemical tests such as coagulase, and sugar oxidation-
fermentation tests. The incidence rate was higher in nostrils (43.9%) than in
ear (31 . 1%) while 1 02 (756%) of the strains were harboured in both ear and
nostrils dually. The antibiotic susceptibility profiles of the isolates were
determined using ciprofloxaicn, penicillin, cloxacillin, ampicillin,
chioramphenicol, lincornycin, septrin, tetracycline, Ampiclox, streptomycin,
peflacine, amoxycillin, gentamycin, rifampicin and erythromycin. Rifampicin
(94.3%) and streptomycin (80.7%) were the most sensitive of all the fifteen
antibiotics used. Amoxycillin (72.9%) and septrin (62.2%) were the most
resistance drugs. Out of the 135 isolates,107 (79.3%) showed multiple
resistance ranging from two to thirteen drugs. The high prevalence and
increasing antibiotic resistance of Staph aurous isolates of livestock's in the
university farm should be a serious cause for concern to avoid possible future
epidemic of life threatening infection among the animals in the farm.
