ABSTRACT
A total of 120 isolates collected from five animal sources were examined for Staphylococcus aureus using mannitol salt agar. Of the isolates 69.8% harboured the organism both in the nasal and udder while 28.3% and 6.9% had it singly in nasal and udder respectively. All the isolates were resistant to one or more of the antibiotics but none to all. The resistance of the isolates varied from 10.5% for Gentamycin to 77.9% for Amoxicillin. Overall, resistance to other antibiotics include chloramphenicol (76.7%) Ampicillin (54J%), and Tetracycline (47.7%) were common while isolates showed least resistance to cloxacillin (15.1%). The study therefore advocates great caution of the extent of use or misuse of drugs in medical and veterinary practice.
