ABSTRACT

This study was done to evaluate In vitro composition of some vitamin contents in Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom grown on HC1 — soaked palm oil bunch. Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom was cultivated with palm oil bunch which the substrate was prepared by drying the palm oil bunch (1 kg) which was soaked separately in 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% HC1 solution respectively for 48 hours while another 1 kg was soaked in 50 ml of water and that serves as a control. Spectrophotometric method was used in the determination of the vitamin content. The result obtained in vitamin K shows that the level of 0.4% HC1 show there was significant increase (P<0.05) when compared with the control, 0.1% HC1, 0.2% HC1, 0.3% HC1, and 0.5% HC1. Vitamin Bi shows that there was a significant (P><0.05) increase in control when compared with 0.1% HC1, 0.2% HC1 treated group and a non- significant (P>0.05) when compared with 0.3% HC1 treated group. Vitamin B3 shows a significant (P<0.05) decrease in control when compared with 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%treared groups while 0.2% and 0.4% HC1 treated group are non-significant (P>0.05). Vitamin E shows a significant decrease in 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5% HC1- treated group when compared with control. This study shows that the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom grown on palm oil bunch substrate had some essential vitamins when compared with the control which are biologically beneficial.
