ABSTRACT

Hisbiscus Sabdariffa is known for delicacy and also for medicinal properties. The present work aim to study the phytochemical, proximate and antioxidant screening of Hisbiscus sabdariffa for various medicinally important compound and their quantification. The result showed that calcium, niacin, riboflavin, iron, phosphorous, and protein are present in calyces of hisbisbus sabdariffa. Protein content was highest while the contents of calcium, niacin, riboflavin, iron, phosphorous were lowest. The major compounds are gossypetin, hibiscetin, quercetin and sabdarefin (Flavonoids) while delphinidin 3-sambubioside and cyaniding 3-sambudioside are the major anthocyanins. The antioxidant activity ofthe investigated extract has a scavenging ability ofDPPH (517nm). The IC50 value ofHisbiscus Sabdariffa extract was 1 OOug/ml while that of ascorbic acid used the reference control was 6.7mg. This indicated that the compounds consisting many calyces of Hisbiscus Sabdariffa, such as anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolic acid contribute to the antioxidant actix ity. Findinds provide evidence that the calyces extract of Hisbiscus Sabdariffa is a potential source of natural antioxidant. This justify its use in fblkloric medicines.
