ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the in
vitro alpha amylase inhibitory activity ofMoringa oleifera and antioxidant
activities of both Moringa oleifera and fermented fruit extract of morinda
citrifolia (Noni). While fresh leaves of Moringa oleifera were collected,
sorted, airdried at room temperature and milled, fresh ripe fruits of Morinda
citrifolia were fermented. Total flavonoid and phenol content were determined.
Free radical scavenging activity of fermented fruit extract ofMorinda
citrifolia (Noni) and methanol extract ofMoringa oleifera were evaluated using
FRAP assay, while alpha amylase inhibitory activity of Moringa oleifera
including its mode of inhibition were also determined. Results showed that the
methanol extract of Moringa oleifera significantly (p<0.05) inhibited alpha
amylase activity (70.78 ± 0.00) at the third minute. Phytochemical analysis
offermented fruit extract (juice) ofMorinda citrifolia (Noni) and methanol
extract of Moringa oleifera revealed that both extracts contained flavonoids in
significant (p< 0.05) concentration (10.90 ± 0.92and 6.26 ± 0.25) while
phenolic content of both extracts were in a decreased concentration (1.27 ±
0.05 and 0.20 ± 0.03). Antioxidant activities using FRAP assay revealed that
both extracts possess maximum antioxidant capacity (Free radical scavenging
activity). These findings suggest that Moringa oleifera possess alpha amylase
inhibitory activity which may aid in lowering postprandial glucose levels and
in addition to that, methanol extract of Moringa oleifera and fermented fruit
extract ofmorinda citrifolia may act as good scavengers offree radicals which
is the sole cause of diabetes mellitus as a result of their increased
antioxidant activities. Thus, the use of Moringa oleifera and Morinda
citrifolia may help reduce the menace caused by Diabetes mellitus and its
complications.
