In Vitro Alpha Amylase Inhibitory Activity And Antioxidant Effects Of Fermented Fruit Extract (Juice) Of Morinda Citrifolia (Noni) And Methanol Extract Of Moringa Oleifera

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the in vitro alpha amylase inhibitory activity of Mori,zga olefera and antioxidant activities of both Moringa olefera and fermented fruit extract of morinda citrfo1ia (Noni). While fresh leaves of Moringa olefera were collected, sorted, air- dried at room temperature and milled, fresh ripe fruits of Morinda citrjfolia were fermented. Total flavonoid and phenol content were determined. Free radical scavenging activity of fermented fruit extract of Morinda citrfolia (Noni) and methanol extract of Moringa olejfera were evaluated using FRAP assay, while alpha arnylase inhibitory activity of Moringa olefera including its mode of inhibition were also determined. Results showed that the methanol extract of Moringa olefera significantly (p<O.05) inhibited alpha amylase activity (70.78 ± 0.00) at the third minute. Phytochemical analysis of fermented fruit extract (juice) of Morinda citrfolia (Noni) and methanol extract of Moringa olefera revealed that both extracts contained flavonoids in significant (p< 0.05) concentration (10.90 ± 0.92and 6.26 ± 0.25) while phenolic content of both extracts were in a decreased concentration (1.27 ± 0.05 and 0.20 ± 0.03). Antioxidant activities using FRAP assay revealed that both extracts possess maximum antioxidant capacity (Free radical scavenging activity). These findings suggest that Moringa olefera possess alpha amylase inhibitory activity which may aid in lowering postprandial glucose levels and in addition to that, methanol extract of Moringa olefera and fermented fruit extract of morinda ciirjfolia may act as good scavengers of free radicals which is the sole cause of diabetes mellitus as a result of their increased antioxidant activities. Thus, the use of Moringa olefera and Morinda citrfo1ia may help reduce the menace caused by Diabetes mellitus and its complications.
