Abstract
The study examined the effects of video-based
multimedia instruction on secondary school students' achievement and retention
in Agricultural Science in Imo State. The study adopted quasiexperimental
research design. The pretest, posttest experimental, and control group design
was adopted. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated for
the study. The population of the study is 5,454 Agricultural Science students
which include 2707 male and 2747 female. The sample size comprised 135 students
(67 male and 68 female) selected from four secondary schools that were
purposively sampled. The schools were randomly assigned to experimental group I
Animation + Narration; experimental group H Animation + On-screen Text;
experimental group HI Animation + Narration + On-screen Text and control group.
A 50-item multiple-choice tests items termed Agricultural Science Achievement
Test (ASAT) was used for collecting data. The validated ASAT was tested
forreliability using KuderRichardson (KR20), which yielded 0.79. Analysis of
covariance (ANCOVA), and Scheffe’s post-hoc analysis were used in determining
the significant differences among the four groups. The results showed that
there was no statistically significant difference among the experimental
groups. Generally, students under multimedia instruction performed better
than[their colleagues in the conventional teaching method. However, students in
conventional teaching method had better retention than other groups. Based on
the findings, it was recommended that video-based multimedia instruction should
be encouraged in schools for teaching Agricultural Science. ) r Keywords:
