ABSTRACT
The study investigate the impact of school
library services on senior secondary students in government college Umuahia in
Abia State. The study was guided by four research questions and four
corresponding null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level
ofsignificant. The study adopted descriptive survey research design, the
population of this study was 53 comprising 22 male and 31 female Business
Studies teachers in public and private secondary schools in Ikwuano Local
Government Area of Abia State. The population ofthe study consist of 400 senior
secondary school students of Government College Umuahia, Abia State and 5
library staff bring total to 405 school librarians and 400 senior secondary
students in the college. The instrument for data collection was the researcher
designed questionnaire titled “Improvisation and Utilization of Instructional
Materials Questionnaire (IUIMQ)”. The instrument was validated by two experts
from Department of Educational Management and one expert from Measurement and
Evaluation of Science Education Department all in Michael Okpara University
ofAgricultre, Umudike. The reliability ofthe instrument was 0.96 which was
obtained using Cronbach’s Alpha statistic. The data collected were analyses
using mean and standard deviation while the null hypotheses were tested using
t-test statistic. The result ofthe data revealed that: the influence of library
services on senior secondary students: include: acquisition of study skills,
higher level of academic success, thinking smart, enhance students learning
ability, academic confidence and retention, ability to continue studying and
learning, keeps me current with academic happenings and increase my reading
ability. Furthermore, the various library services in senior secondary school
include; lending services reference service, reprographic/ photocopying
services, user education, selective dissemination of information, current
awareness services, audio visual services, library hour services and internet
services, but reader advisory services was rejected. Similarly, the strategies
to the challenges students face on the utilization of library services in your
school include: recruitment of professional staff, provision of adequate
information materials, provision of adequate ict facilities, provision of
adequate space, adequate library orientation service, provision of adequate funding
and good library policy. It was recommended that principals of government
secondary school should make it a priority that the required library services
such as lending services, reference service, photocopying service, selective
dissemination of information, internet service, audio visual service and others
needed for students to attain academic excellence be overly made available and
accessible.
