ABSTRACT

 The incidence of heavy metal contamination is attributed to indiscriminate disposal of domestic, industrial, mining and waste waters that are dumped into the water bodies. This study assessed the impact of limestone mining on heavy metals concentration of water samples from Amoffia, Ohaukwu LGA, Ebonyi State. The effect of limestone mining on heavy metals concentration of water samples from Amoffia, Ohaukwu LGA, Ebonyi State was assessed using standard biochemical procedures. Three water samples were collected from three equidistant locations from the limestone mining site. Control samples were collected in a similar way from a stream at Amechi Izhia, Ohaukwu LGA, Ebonyi State. The heavy metals concentrations obtained were (0.42±0.15, 0.57±0.03 and 1.16±0.27 mg/kg), (0.11±0.02, 0.13±0.07 and 0.32±0.08 mg/kg), (0.042±0.0, 0.11±0.07 and 0.19±0.0 mg/kg) and (0.124±0.01 and O.18±O.O3 mg/kg) for mercury, cadmium, arsenic and chromium respectively; and were all significantly (p<0.05) higher than the WHO permissible limits for heavy metals in water. The high concentration of mercury, cadmium, arsenic and chromium indicates that the water samples from Amoffia, Ohaukwu LGA of Ebonyi State are contaminated with heavy metals which could lead to diseases and disorders such as neurological and behavioural disorder, kidney damage, lung and prostate cancer, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, numbness and tickling, gastrointestinal, cardiac and reproduction disorders. There is therefore a need to treat water samples before consumption.
