ABSTRACT

The study  was  carried  out  to ascertain   the  impact  of hank  consolidation   on commercial   banks performance  in Nigeria.   The study  was  carried  out Access  Bonk pie.   The specific  objectives  o.f the study  were  to ascertain   the  impact  of  consolidation   on the  return  on asset  of  the  bank  in Nigeria,   to determine   the impact  of consolidation   on return  on equity  of the bank  in Nigeria,  to evaluate   the  impact  of  consolidation    on  the profit   after  tax  of  the  bank  in  Nigeria   and  to compare   the pre-consolidation   period   and  the post   consolidation   period  of  the profit   of  the bank. Four    econometric   models  specified for the study  were  estimated   with  data sourcedfront financial   statement   of  Access   bank  pie..   The  models   ll'ere    estimated   using   Ordinary   Least Squares    (OLS)   simple   regression    technique    and   Tnest.    The   results    indicated    that   bank consolidation    has  no  significant    impact   on  the  return   on  asset   of  banks   in  Nigeria,    bank consolidation   has  no  significant    impact   on  the  return   on  equity   of  banks   in  Nigeria,    bank consolidation  has no significant  impact  on profit after tax in Nigeria  and that  there  is  significant difference  between  the pre-consolidation   period  and the post  consolidation  period  of the profit  of the  bank.   It  was   recommended    that   Central   Bank  of  Nigeria   should   develop   a  sustained operationalframeworkfor     regular  intervention   into  the banking  system  through  the mechanism

of consolidation.   The last two consolidation   under Prof  Soludo and Mal/am  Sanusi  as governors of the Central  Bank  of Nigeria  help  to stabilize  the system  and prevent  banking  crisis  that were obviously  imminent.
